Fox Point Update: April 2020 Edition

President’s Letter
By Mike Moran | Email
The next few weeks and months may pose a challenge like we have never seen before in most of our lifetimes. The challenges that we may face as a Country and as a community could very much be life altering if the recent events of around the world hit the United States as estimated.
Please as you hear the words of caution from our State & Federal governments, please error on the side of caution and follow their direction. Within the community of Fox Point, I ask that you pay close attention to your friends, family and neighbors to make sure each and every one of us moves through this challenge. If you have a neighbor that lives alone or is elderly, please get their contact data from them and check in with them regular basis.
Please make sure they have someone to call if they need help or assistance in any way. Many of them may not be on the Nextdoor platform which might otherwise allow them to reach out for assistance.
As a local community we not only have to take care of our families but our neighbors as well. In the last couple of days, I have actually noticed more people offering a greeting to each other as you walk past them. A simply “hello” or “good morning” or “good afternoon” simply means that we are starting to act more like a community rather than a large group of individuals. It will be the little acts of kindness that ultimately will mean the most during the coming weeks and months.
If anyone needs assistance from the Fox Point Board or the Village of Barrington, please let me know.

Social
By Rena Slovick | Email
I hope everyone is doing well as we all continue to navigate our “new normal” we have unfortunately canceled all social events for the month of April. We are planning on rescheduling the Card Party for hopefully sometime in the Fall.
In the meantime, here are a few things we can all do during this time of quarantine to remain social (and sane)!
“Chalk Your Walk!” – draw or write encouraging messages along driveways or sidewalk while you’re out with family
Posting Messages of Support for our Healthcare Workers & others on your Windows
Virtual Meetings/Happy Hour with Friends/Family using Zoom, Google Hangouts, or FaceTime
Spring Cleaning – Marie Kondo all the things! Keep them aside for the Fox Point Garage Sale or Donate them to those in need.
Support Local Businesses by grabbing take-out
Donate to Local Charities or Give Blood to the American Red Cross

Common Grounds

Hi Everyone!
I hope everyone is safe and in good health! Hopefully, with some warm weather the virus will pass soon, and we can all get out and enjoy all the Fox Point amenities.
I have spoken to our landscaping crew and they will be back to business soon. Before the shutdown, they were out a few weeks ago to complete a pre-Spring cleanup since the weather was so nice. In the next week or so they will be back out to finish and complete that process. Once they return, they will be following the guidelines set forth by the Illinois Landscapers Contractors Association so that everyone remains safe. I will be in touch with them weekly since this is all subject to change.
As most of you know, the monument walls continue to be a project that we are looking at as a board. If you read these reports, you know they are in bad shape. Currently, I’m digging into this again to see what our best options are to preserve or amend those structures. I should be able to give you a more detailed update from here on out each month on my progress. Stay tuned and please reach out with any questions or concerns.
I have also set up the mosquito spraying for the 2020 season. Our vendor will spray the tennis courts, playground, and the common area around the pool. This will start the first week in June and last through the beginning of September. They will spray every other Thursday.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Stay safe!
Lake
By David Jobes | Email
While everyone is trying to acclimate to working from home and physical distancing, we are moving ahead by planning summer lake activities.
The Fox Point Lake Committee is pleased to announce plans for a neighborhood carp derby. Carp are a nuisance species overpopulating Lake Louise and harming the water quality as well as the bottom surface of the lake. We hope this event will significantly reduce the number of Carp in our lake as well as provide neighbors an opportunity to gather and socialize at the lake. Carp baits will be provided, and prizes will be awarded! Unlike the annual fishing derby, which will be scheduled for later in the summer, we are hoping to attract older children and parents to join in the fishing due to the size and strength of carp. But don’t leave the kids home, we will have a fishing expo for our young anglers on the shore of the marina.
Tentatively, we are planning to hold the event on Sunday, June 14th from 9am-11am. We understand that scheduling may need to be flexible due to uncertainty about social gathering. We hope you mark your calendars and plan to join us for a fun morning that will help keep our lake healthy.
Stay healthy and look forward to reconnecting physically in the near future.

Playground & Tennis Courts Closed
I hope everyone is staying safe and practicing social distancing. In order to stay consistent with the message coming from the State of Illinois and our Village President, Karen Darch, we have decided to close our playground and tennis courts. We will look to reopen these neighborhood assets once we get word from our local governments.
Tennis
By Mark Johnson | Email
In response to the interest from many residents, we were able to work with First Service and have the tennis nets installed earlier than planned. I walked by the courts today (3/21) and I was happy to see the courts were being used.
However, Governor Pritzker’s stay at home order extends to playgrounds and tennis courts. As a result, we are required to shut down access to the courts until the order is lifted.
SUMMER LESSONS
On a positive note as we look forward to the summer with hopes of the covid-19 pandemic behind us, here is the preliminary schedule for summer lessons:
- @4/8 – The lessons schedules should be posted around April 8th
- 5/1 – 5/4 – review lesson signups and revisit/adjust schedules as necessary
- 5/15 – deadline for signing update for lessons
- 6/9 – first week of lessons, running through the week of 8/3 (9 weeks).
Thanks for Christine Mickey for her partnership and guidance for the upcoming summer lesson schedule.
First Serve will facilitate signup and scheduling via Signup Genius (SUG). Using SUG will allow for monitoring session enrollments that hopefully benefits our parents (enrollment transparency) and First Serve (high/low participation) so everyone can adjust accordingly. Given the transition of enrollment responsibility to First Serve, you’ll be directed to Dana from First Serve should you have any questions or concerns.
More to come but looking forward to better weather and optimistic about relaxed social distancing restrictions before the scheduled lessons sessions.
Cheers, Mark
