The Little Acts of Kindness

As I reflect upon 2018 as President of the Fox Point Homeowners Association, I feel honored to have been part of such a great group of people that I call friends and neighbors. It Is extremely obvious that Fox Point is filled with some of the kindest and most caring people. Neighbors that will reach out to a fellow neighbor in need and friends that truly bring to light the meaning of the holidays in all our daily lives.  

Early in the year, we experienced the kindness and warmth of our neighbors as they reached out to help a neighbor that most of us have never met before. It started with a simple post on Nextdoor.com by a concerned neighbor requesting help for a neighbor in need as they were being evicted due to a bank foreclosure. What followed were incredible acts of kindness and compassion by friends and neighbors in Fox Point as dozens of people came out that morning to help our neighbors save anything and everything that could be saved from that very sad and horrible time in their life. Whether you helped with the loading of the donated truck or assisted in the transfer of their items into storage, or donated money to support the rebuilding of their lives, you embody what it means to be a friend and a neighbor in Fox Point.

We ended 2018 with another incredible act of support and kindness for some neighbors who had recently moved into Fox Point. An act of vandalism, the replacement of a flag that had significant meaning in their lives, for another, created a powerful statement. It caused the family to second guess their decision to move into our community. It brought fear & skepticism into their lives and to the place that should be their haven, their home. The immediate and overwhelming response from the neighborhood was again something truly amazing. The kindness and compassion of the neighbors in Fox Point caused this story to be picked up by most of the local media outlets as well as one of the national nightly news channels on Christmas evening. With the incredible support of our local Fox Point community, I can only hope that those that were impacted feel comfortable in Fox Point. I hope they know that we have their back and will support them as friends and neighbors, always.

I guess it is not so much our duty to help neighbors and friends, but more a responsibly as a fellow human. Life is full of ups and down, happiness and sadness, joy and pain but in the end, it is the little acts of kindness that make such a big difference in each of our lives.

I experienced such an act on Thanksgiving as I left the Fox Point Turkey Trot and went to Starbucks. It was a cold a blustery day and she took a few seconds that chilly morning to stop and wish me a Happy Holiday as I entered the building. As I continued up the line and ordered my drink the casher informed me that that same young lady had paid for my drink. It was something so simple yet so kind, something that took only a few seconds but had an impact on me still weeks after her actions. At that point I was blown away by the kindness and warmth by another person in our extended community.

My wish for 2019 is that we in Fox Point continue as community that embodies kindness and compassion towards our fellow neighbors & friends and that each of us reaches out on a regular basis and offers their own little acts of kindness to others.

“Well Virginia, there is indeed a Santa” and he found his way to Fox Point in 2018!

Happy 2019 Neighbors! I hope your holidays were full of cheer. I want to send a shout out to Jen Livingston for coordinating the Santa Visits again this year. This neighborhood favorite involves a huge logistical lift at an already busy time of year, so if you see Jen around the neighborhood, please thank her for taking this on!
We have some fun events coming up. Once again, as we head into 2019, please feel free to reach out to me directly to volunteer to coordinate recurring or new events – the neighborhood would be very grateful for your time!

Annual Card Party – Save the date for April 12, 2019 at Makray

Plans are underway for the annual Fox Point Card Party! Melissa Mickey and Christie Hewlett are finalizing the details for the event. It will take place at Makray Memorial Golf Club. More information including sign up date and cost coming soon. We are looking forward to this great event!

Common Grounds

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a chance to enjoy your time with family and friends. 2018 was a good year and gave me a good chance to get accustomed to this role. I was able to get started on few projects and now can get started on some new as well. Each month I hope to give you an idea of what I’m working on and how it might impact our neighborhood.

To close out the year we obviously are now finished with our weekly maintenance. The final week for Fall cleanup was November 12-14^th. During that time the crew also put out daffodils at the main entrances that will bloom this coming Spring.

Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will also have all the village operated gas lanterns working and in good order. Currently, there are 3 that need repair. The lantern at Valley/Old Mill is waiting on Nicor to come out and fix the gas. The other two are at Old Mill Court and Lakeshore Court. All three will be addressed by the village contractor once Nicor is able to fix the gas issue at Valley/Old Mill.

The cul-de-sac project for 2018 is complete with more phases coming in the next couple of years. This year we completed Oxbow (35 red chokeberries and 250 daffodils), The Point (13 tardiva hydrangeas, 250 daffodils, and 1 state street maple), and South Shore (21 shining sumacs and 250 daffodils). I think it turned out great and look forward to seeing how those look this Spring!
