Fox Point Update: March 2018 Edition

President’s Letter

Spring is just around the corner and the neighborhood is getting ready to wake up to another beautiful spring in Fox Point. Fox Point is indeed an unbelievable neighborhood full of incredible beauty and very kind and compassionate people.
Recently we witnessed the true definition of kindness and compassion as hundreds of Fox Point neighbors assisted one of our very own Fox Pointers as they found themselves in a time of great need. Whether they assisted in loading or unloading the truck or made an effort to donate money, the very simply and selfless acts of kindness is what truly defines the true nature of being part of the Fox Point family. I want to thank everyone for their very selfless act of kindness especially Jack Keenan. Instead of simply driving past something that he thought was not right, he stopped, assisted, and then reached out to neighborhood for assistance. It ultimately took a “village” to assist but it started out with one person willing to stop and make a difference.
I also wanted to thank the team that assisted the Lake Committee in cleaning trash off the island on Lake Louis in early February. It is yet another example of the neighbors in Fox Point coming together to make this neighborhood more beautiful and one of the best communities in Barrington!!
Spring is a busy time for the members of the homeowner’s board as the team is working tirelessly on many tasks including the opening of the 2018 pool season, the start to the maintenance & landscaping programs, and many great social events for all ages of Fox Pointers. I encourage everyone to get involved or get back involved in Fox Point as we always need great ideas and a helpful hand in all areas of our community. It is through the continuing efforts of all of us that we continue to grow and prosper in this great neighborhood.
As spring approaches and the tulips start to bloom, I encourage everyone to get out, get involved, come to our events or simply walk around our great neighborhood. Enjoy the beauty of Fox Point and meet the incredible people that are your neighbors here in Fox Point.

We are looking forward to a great 2018 Fox Point Tennis Season on our soon to be new tennis courts! Demolition of the current tennis courts will start in early April. The new tennis courts are targeted to be finished by Memorial Day.
We are currently working with First Serve to plan child and adult lessons for Summer 2018. Please check the upcoming newsletters for more details on these classes.
The Fox Point Tennis Committee will also host social tennis activities this summer so watch for more details on those events as well.
Common Grounds
By Jay Roberts | Email
Greetings fellow Fox Pointers! I’m truly excited to have recently been elected to the Fox Point Board. I will be your chairman for the Common Grounds. I realize I have some big shoes to fill! Mike did a tremendous job which is evident by his detailed reports each month and by looking around the neighborhood at the improvements in all the areas related to this position. I’m looking forward to the challenge, learning along the way, and to carrying out some of my own visions for the neighborhood as well.
In 2017 we completed many projects. This would include all of the new plantings, maintaining both entrances, some improvements to the boat dock area, and some fresh paint to the playground equipment. These are just a few of the many accomplishments. Outside of the larger assets the (Lake, Pool, and Tennis Courts) we have many smaller assets and common areas that need to be maintained, improved, and keep our attention. It is my commitment to ensure that we go into 2018 the same way we ended this year.
I’m eager to get started and to see what 2018 brings us! I’ll have a better understanding by Spring of all the many projects and goals that need to be reached. If you need something or have any suggestions and/or ideas to help get me started, please feel free to reach out and let me know.
This is our neighborhood and I want to make sure we continue our focus in the appropriate areas and look for new ways to improve as well!
Pool
By Horace Seely-Brown | Email
Neighbors, 86 Days until the kickoff of pool season! We are busy at work making sure all is in order for another successful season of seeing kids smiling faces and the neighborhood coming together. The pool is a great neighborhood asset and what drove many of us to Fox Point in the first place. We look to maintain and improve upon that asset for many years to come.
Please be on the look out for swim team and water polo updates. I know schedules and coaching staffs are being confirmed and communication will be forthcoming in the weeks/month ahead.
As always, if you have any suggestion on ways to improve upon the swim season or the facility itself, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Social

Spring is in the air (some days anyway!). Join your neighbors for the upcoming Fox Point social events:
Easter Egg Hunt – March 17 at 9 am (Free event)
The annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place at the lot across from the boat docks (otherwise known as “Lot C”). Please congregate on the lawn near the boat docks and we will lead everyone across the street to the hunt around 9 am. Given there are a mix of ages at the hunt, please tell your children to limit their hauls to 20 eggs so the littles are sure to get some eggs. Also – the ground will definitely be muddy, so wear your rain/snow boots! A big thanks to Jodi Johnson for chairing the event.

Card Party – April 20 ($55/person)
Plans are underway for the annual Fox Point Card Party! Melissa Mickey and Christie Hewlett are finalizing the details for the event and will circulate a link to the SignUpGenius soon. The event will take place at Makray Memorial Golf Club.
Lake Report

The thaw is underway! Lake Louise is home to year round activity. The weather this past month was very friendly to both skaters and ice fisherman. As you can see from the picture below, David Jobes of Oxbow Way enjoyed the latter with this Lake Louise Crappie.
ISLAND CLEAN UP DAY
Thank you to the following residents who helped with our island clean up day
- Jeff Danke
- Tim Grabaki
- Brad Marion
- Clair Casper
We braved the cold and the terrain to find and remove several bags of trash from the island. Most notable finds included a 8′ folding table, a lawn chair, and some wall to wall carpeting. I also collected a few rounds worth of golf balls. Please remind your teenage residents that if they do venture onto the island that they should take their trash with them. Composite plastic items and metal beverage containers are not going to go away on their own.
EAM, our lake management service provider, will use multiple rounds of bacteria treatments to try to reduce the sediment buildup in the Flint retention pond. There is currently an average of 4′ of sediment in the pond. This is about 1/2 the total depth, which is less than ideal.
Over the course of 2018, EAM will treat the pond with bacteria in the hopes of a reduction in the sediment levels. EAM will create a sediment map of before and after so that we can determine if the treatments have the desired effect. If successful, it can be another tool we use to manage sediment and the waterways.
More projects and initiatives are in the planning stages now for Lake Louise. If you would like to help out in any way, please drop me a note at geoff.ommen@bairdwarner.com.
Safety and Welfare

Light ‘Em Up! For all you Blackhawk or hockey fans…. Is there nothing better than when the Blackhawks score and the goal light flashes behind the net, the siren starts blaring, the music starts playing, and the crowd goes wild?
As we approach spring, it’s time to turn our attention to the gas lamps that most residents have in their front yards. In a few recent rides through the neighborhood, I have noticed that probably 30% of the lamps are not on. These lights not only add to the curb appeal of our neighborhood, but help with security on the streets with some lighting at night.
Please take some time over the next couple of weeks to make it a priority to get your lamp in working order. Below are some simple steps to help light up the neighborhood.
Step 1: Turn off the gas supply to the lamp. Depending upon your lamp, the gas valve might be a device at the base of the lamppost, a screw on the bottom of the lamp light or an on/off lever near the top of the lamp light. It might also be found on your meter near your house.
Step 2: Open or remove one of the lamp’s glass panels. Most glass panels simply lift-up with your finger and you pull them away from the lamp. Some lamps use hinges on the glass panel that you simply open like a door.
Step 3: Inspect the mantle, which is the fabric-looking bag that covers the burner tips. If the mantle has holes or is missing, replace it with a new one. Some mantles have ceramic connectors that pull on and off, while others simply tie onto the burner tip. Replacement mantles are available at home improvement centers and gas lamp suppliers.
Step 4: Turn on the lamp’s gas supply. Light a match and hold the flame under the mantle. If you’re lighting a new mantle, do not touch the mantle with the flame. The fabric on the outside of the mantle will ignite without direct contact with the flame. If you’re lighting an old usable mantle, hold the match close enough to ignite the mantle without touching it with the match.
Step 5: Close the glass panel door or replace the glass panel back into the lamp light.
Step 6: If all else fails, call a handyman.
So let’s light ‘em up and create some excitement in the neighborhood!

Fox Point Water Polo
Hello FP —Time to start thinking about FOX POINT WATER POLO!
While the season doesn’t start until the end of May/early June, registration season is coming soon. The team is looking to cultivate new players as well as field returning players – all FP boys and girls age 9-15 are welcome! Practices will begin the first week of June and will be held 2-3x on weeknights between 6:30-8:00 (specific practice schedule will be worked out closer to the season). Please see below for the match schedule.
We’re thrilled to announce that COLIN KERR will again be leading the 2018 Dolphins as Head Coach. Colin was head coach last year and received many kudos for his leadership, skill and coaching style. He played water polo at both BHS and on the BSC club team. We will be working during the next couple of months to map out the practice schedule, and depending on team size, hiring assistant coach(es).
PLEASE LOOK FOR OTHER DOLPHINS TEAM AND REGISTRATION ANNOUNCEMENTS COMING SOON (early March via the Team Unify Dolphins Website). Water Polo Registration fee is $115 if paid before April 15 (after that date a $25 late fee will be charged as we cannot hire assistant coaches without know the team size).
